With the likes of Adam Beyer, Hot Since 82, Solardo and Danny Howard all supporting his last smash ‘Black Betty’, the resurgent Freddie Frampton has set about rapidly re-establishing himself since returning to the fold. He returns here with another innovative groover in the form of ‘Grinning’.

Displaying more of a stripped-back approach then his other recent efforts, ‘Grinning’ once again sees him show his love for old blues sounds with a choice, impassioned vocal providing the atmospheric dressing to his taut beats. The succinct tech house groove pumps away with crisp percussion and throbbing bass tones, with the mood of the track building slowly.

“This has always been one of my favourite vocals,” he says of the sample, “and I'm not just talking about the tone. The meaning of the lyrics is so bang on; it just breathes positivity in a widely negative world. However, when you have a vocal this hooky, there's always a danger it can end up being a bit cheesy. So I purposefully made the percussion punchy to prevent this happening. And for those who don't like vocals; there's always the Dub Mix.

Frampton succeeds in his intention to let the vocal take centre stage at just the right moments, stripping back the arrangement to just the most subtle textures and tones to let the mood really come to the fore. The drops are high-impact yet understated, making this a classy yet hugely effective track that will provide a memorable, standout moment in any set when used at the right time.

Grinning is currently receiving report from the following:
